Arms dealers flood war-torn Middle East with weapons and then lobby EU to militarize borders against refugees—profiting from both ends of conflict. The report Border Wars: The Arms Dealers Profiting from Europe's Refugee Tragedy, released jointly by the European Stop Wapenhandel and Transnational Institute (TNI), outlines arms traders' pursuit of profit in the 21st century's endless conflicts.
The report tracks the global level of forced displacement which totaled 65.3 million people (including refugees, internally displaced persons, and asylum-seekers) in 2015. Children made up about half of all refugees and over 80% of refugees were hosted by low- and middle-income countries.
The Economist profiles Mohammed Mukul Hossine, a young Bangladeshi working in Singapore, whose recent book of poems “Me Migrant” explores the pain of migration. The poetry is especially sensitive to the challenge of homesickness and loneliness. The book was supported by Healthserve, a non-profit serving migrant workers in Singapore.
A summary of the report “Migrant Smuggling Networks” was recently released by Europol-INTERPOL outlining the organizational structures of migrant smuggling from Africa, the Middle East and Asia to Europe--an estimated US$5-6 billion industry in 2015 alone. The report highlights risks for migrants, including unaccompanied minors, to labour and sexual exploitation.
